EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
