Senate Passes Legislation to Disclose Epstein Records

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of case documents associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Earlier that day, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next heads to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He signaled on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Although the president has for months rejected the controversy over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Reaction

Democrats, along with victims and their representatives who were present in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would reveal identifying details of individuals involved, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
