Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
