They're Applying to America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently a study forecast his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, however it is still disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.

It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for other people, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide them your pullover as well.

The obvious and straightforward truth that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a type of radical love concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Best Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or not?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to that which renders it distinctive and magnificent, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it mean pretending the most negative of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both meekness and faith, a blend that committed US believers ought to accept.
