This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The narrative commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
