Time is optimal to switch Man Utd's formation - Amorim insists.

Manchester United players ahead of a match
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven senior players absent from the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim contends that altering Manchester United's tactical system due to public noise would have been "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his usual back three setup with wing-backs and instead use an orthodox back four with two defensive midfielders.

He himself conceded this ultimately became a six-man defensive block in the closing stages as his team dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second shutout of the season.

Although he once memorably said that even the Pope could pressure him to change his approach, Amorim maintains the ability to utilize different formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he stresses he could solely alter the tactics when his team were doing sufficiently well - lest it would seem as if he was succumbing to external criticism.

"When I arrived here the previous campaign, I recognized maybe I lacked the squad to play well in that formation, but it was the commencement of a process," he said.

"We were trying to establish an philosophy. Now is a separate time. We don't have a lot of players, and we need adapt, so they comprehend why we are making changes.

"It is not because of the demands of you guys, or the supporters.

"Whenever the press discuss changing the formation constantly, I cannot change because the players will think I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the end for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our system, that becomes the right time to evolve.

"This will help us become a more complete squad because when all the personnel return, we are not intending to employ a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

With only two victories in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is right to claim his team have been in good form.

He is, however, working with a severely stretched squad, with seven senior players already confirmed absent for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will grow if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the knock that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is reportedly pressing his boss to allow him to return after his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already insisting he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. You can write that."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be heavily involved, as while most injured players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen monitoring the pre-match routines from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to continue offering guidance.

"He is a leader," he declared. "He must not be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"There are bad things sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of positive qualities. After he finishes treatment, he goes to observe the other guys practicing. There are a lot of aspects that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Injured Personnel

Although the specific date for the captain's comeback - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, by the end of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
